After moving to Bangalore, it turns out that I would need to get one or more UPS’s for the machines at home. The place we will be moving to in a few weeks does have power backup, but if/when there is a power cut it takes a few minutes for the generators to kick in and is not instantaneous as I was thinking. I have never bought a UPS until now and don’t have any experience with it - what are the things that I need to consider?...

Today India celebrates its 60th independence from the British Raj - Happy Birthday! So 5 more years to retirement? . Over the last 6 decades has had quite a ride. There has been a lot of talk about it lately here in the local media in UK along with many celebrations in London (mostly to woo Indian business, Bollywood, etc). The BBC showed a very interesting documentary called “ Partition: The Day India Burned ” on the partition of India from the British colonial days in two states - India and Pakistan....
Don’t get me wrong - I love Italy - the country (whatever little I have seen), the food, the language, the people but all this is also true for India

Interesting story by the NYTimes on how American graduates are joining Indian companies and going to India for initial training before going back to their offices. They also talk a little about their experiences in a developing country and how some of the most basic things are different.
BBC has this very inspiring story about how a few people give Indians from the poorest rung of society a chance to get into IIT (Indian Institute of Technology). Those of you are familiar with IIT, know how huge an achievement this is. Those who are not familiar with IIT - they are looked at IIT = MIT + Harvard + Princeton to give you an idea. There are many rankings and depends on what you believe as comparing apples and oranges is always difficult....

Although I keep to my geeky side of things, every now and then I do come across a political story that I find intriguing for various reasons which I post here. This is one of them, reported by BBC about Nixon’s dislike of ‘witch’ Indira as he called Indira Gandhi , India’s Prime Minister from 1966 - 77 and then 1980 - 84.
I stumbled across an interesting blog - all written in Hindi - and boy is my Hindi rusty! But this is an excellent example of the usage (and limitations) of a UNICODE implementation. Not sure of the content of the blog itself as it will …. ahem …. take me a little while reading up and understanding. Flame mails awaited eagerly.

Picked this up from Karan’s post and was quite glad to read it. FAT has been around fro ages and Microsoft trying to patent it does not fit in the common sense mode thinking that most of us are use to (ya right!). Its the same as some bright people in USA tried to patent some of the Ayurvedic medicines that have been practises in India for the past five thousand years, which identify a person’s constitution and treats the person with diet, exercise, meditation, herbs, massage, sun, and breathing to bring harmony to the physical, mental, and spiritual health of the individual....
I don’t know how this happened, but one of my old <strong>posts</strong> now shows up in the top 10 when you google on “ <strong>Bangalored</strong> ”. This has generated not only a lot of traffic to the weblog but also some people just not getting my original intent of the post - which was a Joke. Oh Well, you can brood over it and let me know your feelings too.
Karan has a very interesting <strong>discussion</strong> going on Orkut and India. Here is essentially my view on the whole topic: In my personal experience, most Indians that I have met here in USA are full of crap when it comes to India! They have viewpoint hearing that one goes “whaaaat?????” and left scratching their heads. When I dig a little more, it turns out that they have lived all their live in one small town (or a big metro) before they stepped on a plane to come here and that makes up their Indian experience and viewpoint!...
On a different note than most of my entries here, last weekend I went to an Indian classical music concert by <strong>Zakir Hussain</strong> and <strong>Master Pandit Jasraj</strong> and was organized by the <strong>Bay Area Performing Arts</strong> . The concert was amazing, I have seen Zakir a number of times earlier and as always be was mind blowing. This was the first time though I saw Jasraj and did not know he sang Krishan <strong><em>Bhajans</em></strong> ....

Though I have never worked for (or at) a “big” Indian software company <strong>this</strong> is interesting as more and more Indian companies are taking a shelter under various US tax schemes. I am no tax expert and am not sure the legality of this, but this could be a huge “profit” for the Indian companies if it is upheld in court. Does invite the question, do they pass this onto the average joe working their butts off?...
